East Antrim Cyclo Cross

Following the superb start to the Cyclo Cross season at Lurgan last Sunday, the narrow wheeled off road wobblies are in action again this weekend, the County Antrim coastal town of Larne hosting the East Antrim Club’s event on Saturday, 11th October. Once again the race venue will be the superb Seacourt Community Centre.

According to race organiser, Danny Hylands, the course has been changed slightly from previous years with only one set of hurdles and one run up; this should please the moanin minnies. Danny describes the course as very fast with plenty of flowing dips and turns. Last years race was a thriller, Lewis Ferguson just getting the verdict after a great battle with Conor Campbell and Graham Boyd.

The race programme is as follows. The U8, U10 and U12 races will take place at 11.30am with the MTB Support race at 12.15pm. The U-14 and U-16 riders will race in this event and will have a set number of laps to complete. There will be free entries for U8, U10 and U12 riders. The Cyclo Cross extravaganza starts at 1.30pm. The East Antrim Audi Club are grateful to the following for sponsorship in support of the event:
Larne Borough Council, Northern Bank, Knott Bros Speedy Fit, Larne Coach Works, Mark Wilson Supermarkets, Powerade, Car-Net Car + Van Sales. One of the best things about the East Antrim CX is the après nosh, and yes once again the famous soup and rolls will be on offer,

The venue will be signposted from the outskirts of Larne on the A8. Sign on opens at 10am. Further info can be obtained from Danny Hylands at 07969738893 or by emailing Sir Danny at dannyhylands@sky.com.

Cross season kicks off this Sunday!
The first round of the Cyclocross racing season begins at Lurgan Park on Sunday October 5th. Lurgan Park offers cyclists an excellent venue for off road riders in pleasant surroundings. The course is situated next to Waves Leisure Complex in Queen St, (just off the main street) Lurgan. The approach roads will be signed on the morning of the event. Parking provided in the grounds of Waves Leisure Complex. Use the car park to your right when entering the ......
Da Cooley Thriller' XC mountain bike race

Cuchulainn Cycle Club hosted ‘Da Cooley Thriller’ XC mountain bike race last Saturday on the Cooley Peninsula. Mountain bike enthusiasts from all over the country. It was an early start for those up from Cork. The Carlingford Sailing Club was to be the sign-on venue and the weather was to be kind for a change as the sun shown from mid day once the early morning mist lifted from Slieve Foy and surrounding hills. It was a neutral start through the village with a Garda escort, and from above the village up the fire road it was

Ulster XC championships - by Andy Potts
A clear blue sky, spectators in t-shirts, riders loosing bucket loads of sweat?  No not a description of a far of race in Europe, this was the Ulster XC champsionships on Saturday at the superb Dunmore Mountain course.  For the second year in succession Dromara CC served up a perfect day of weather and action.  To top everything, even the roadies got in on the act by lifting two of the titles on offer!  Perhaps the only downer for Dromara et mois was the usual Ulster type moaner eg.  ‘it’s a bit muddy’, ‘there are too many puddles'........
Transrockies Day 7

Left to right -  Paul Coyne, David Gill, Evan Ryan, Ian Sutton

Today was the last day of the TR. For all the riders it’s the final step to completing an incredible challenge. With six days under the belt there is just one more hurdle before you cross that finish line in Fernie and receive your finishers medal. In the past the final stage was generally shorter but not this year. A total of 78.8 kilometres and over 2100 meters of climbing stood between the riders and that final finish line.

The day started a half an hour later than usual with kick off at 8:30 and started where the finish was the previous day on the main street in Blairemore (Crowsnest Pass). The sun was out and it was much warmer than every other day even at that early hour and the forecast was for blues skies and 35 degrees, a real change for us Irish who are used to much cooler temperatures. The start today was.....

Tour of Ireland - stage 2 report by Myles McCorry
Fredrik Ericsson (Pezula Racing) Swedish champion in time trial and he was the strongest man on the roads of the second stage of Ireland's only professional cycle race, but you wont see his name in the results. The stage started from a damp, Thurles this morning and 154 riders raced north to Loughrea, Co. Galway, over epic, West of Ireland roads for a distance of 155 km. After 20 km of random, fruitless attacking the bunch stalled and a loan rider Ericsson jumped off the front of the bunch. After another 5 km  he had  nearly 3 minutes but still no one thought he could possiably stay clear. The crew following the race never changed their minds until 110 km.....
Irish National MTB Marathon Championships 2008
In fantastic sun shine the National Marathon Championships took place across the mountains of West Wicklow and Dublin. Just short of 100 riders lined up on the start line at 10am. After a race briefing, the mass start saw the riders cruise down the road for 5km, a nice warm up before the climbing that was to come. The course had held up well in most sections despite the recent bad weather although the formidable farmyard climb that led to the high point of the course had suffered badly. The same could be said for the riders who faced into the gruesome climb. 850 metres of climbing per lap awaited the riders with an option of 30km half distance or the full 60km.....
Trans Rockies – Day 4
I’m writing this report a day late (still no network coverage so it doesn’t really matter a lot) so I will do my best to remember yesterday.   Stage 4 left the Nipika resort were we had been for two nights and headed off to White Swan 110km’s away.  The start today was quick enough, as usual it was an 8am start which means getting up at 6am for breakfast.  Tired bodies and minds were dragged out of bed and forced to shovel food inside in order to get enough fuel for the days event.
Trans Rockies – Day 3
Well today we started in 19th overall in the open men’s category.  The stage had been billed as a time trial (aren’t they usually short??) and the course looked simple enough with only 1500+meters of climbing.

Because of our overall ranking we were starting at 1:24pm and the sun was splitting the stones.  Teams were being sent off at 1 minute gaps and if you missed your slot you were given a major time penalty.  We lined up and waited for our countdown and off we went.  Before the race I was feeling very lethargic and just couldn’t get myself motivated but once you hear the gun that all

Trans Rockies, Heaven and Hell – Day 2

Today’s stage was only 73km long but with 3813 meters of climbing the stage description warned us to ‘be prepared for the biggest day of vertical served this week’  They were not wrong. Myself and Evan (Team-WORC) and Paul and Ian (WORC Masters) were all in the first pen on the grid which is based on your current standings.  There was less pressure today to get a good start so we settled on the second row of the grid leaving some space for when the big guns arrived.  Ian and Paul were delayed with the medics and were a good bit further back down the grid.  8am and the start gun was fired and we took off out of the fantastic K2
